The Six Constraints Nobody Tells You About

Everyone says "it takes time and money." That's the version of reality most people are handed, and most people stay stuck inside it their whole lives — because they're only solving for two variables in a six-variable problem.

The actual constraints:

1. Time — yes, this one's real
2. Money — yes, this one too
3. Energy — not the same as time. You can have 8 hours and zero capacity.
4. Attention — not the same as energy. You can be awake and unable to focus.
5. Presence — not the same as attention. You can be in the room and not there.
6. Relationships — the binding constraint that collapses everything else when it breaks.

The sandbox — the system you were handed — profits from you thinking it's only two. Every productivity course, hustle culture post, and "just work harder" framework is designed around the two-variable model. You work more hours, spend less money, and wonder why you're still losing.

You're not losing because you're not working hard enough. You're losing because you're solving the wrong problem with the wrong number of variables.

What changes when you see all six

When you map all six constraints honestly, you stop making decisions that solve for money at the cost of energy — and then wondering why you have money but can't function. You stop optimizing for time when attention is actually the bottleneck. You stop agreeing to things that pay well but break the sixth constraint.

The goal isn't to maximize any one constraint. It's to find the path where all six stay above a floor you can actually live at.

Phase one, two, three

Most people are stuck in one phase and calling it life:

• Phase 1 — Get money: Survival. Every decision runs through financial viability first.
• Phase 2 — Play the game: Once the floor is stable, you can choose work aligned with what you're actually building.
• Phase 3 — Change the game: Mission. The long arc. The thing that matters past your lifetime.

Most people never leave Phase 1. Not because they lack capability — because they don't have a framework that accounts for all six constraints at once.
